A little less educational than I thought... December 29, 2003
By A Customer
Durability: Educational: Fun:
Though we love Leapster, I was a little disappointed in this cartridge. I do not believe the first grade cartridge addresses enought first grade skills - i.e. limited phonics skills, and only the very basics of first grade math. I didn't feel this cartridge challenged my child like I wanted it to, and having taught first grade for many years, I thought the cartridge would address a broader range of skills reaching to the end of first grade materials. It seems to only hit on beginning first grade skills and here we are in the middle of the year! It is fun and he does enjoy it... but I am already waiting for the second grade cartridge to be released because he is ready for more.

Great Game, but too simple for a real first grader December 21, 2004

I bought this cartridge for my 4YO son. He loves it. The games are fun and very educational. His favorite is the "LetterPiller" game, where the child guides a little caterpillar to letters in order to form words. There is a cute show when the word is complete and the game is very forgiving of mistakes. This has really helped my son learn to keep trying. Before he got his leapster, he would get upset after making a mistake, now he doesn't care at all. There is also a bumper car math game which is a little advanced for him, but would probably be good for a 5YO. There is a "log ride" game which teaches grammer. My son really likes that one too. While I think this is way to easy for a real first grader, it is perfect for a 4-6YO child. My 4YO absolutely adores it. So I think the game deserves 5 stars even though they got the ages wrong.

My son is happy and learning March 15, 2006
By B. Jainchill
I wanted to buy a game that would make my 5 year old happy and, at the same time, improve his skills in Math and language. This game achieved achieved both ends.I strongly recommend it for kids in Kindergarten, because it stimulates them. I don't know whether it would work as well for 1st graders.

Nephew liked it for a minute
It held his interest for a little while. When I quizzed him, he seemed to be picking up some of the basic that the game was trying to teach.
